Joe Varney and his wife Mignon live in Bradford, Michigan. Their children include Vicky, Casey and their youngest Troy. Both boys are married by 1998, to Alissa and Brittany respectively with Troy and Brittany expecting the first grandchild in early 1999.^HS7

Joe and Mignon have been friends with their backyard neighbor Jason MacRae since high school, although Jason was a grade behind Mignon. Jason and Mignon dated for a while, a couple years before she married Joe, and had a memorable night together at a drive-in.^HS7 Jason believes there was no way he could have made it through the last years with Christine without their help and his son Duane was good friends with Troy.

Mignon was described as "was well-dressed; she worked in an office and didn't like to look like a slob. A little shorter than her daughter, she was even heavier-set, but still, even at their shared age, not a bad looking woman, going gray now."^HS7
