Matt Peckanen was Randy Clark's roommate at Northern Michigan University.

Matt was a journalism major and he often talks with a Yooper accent. Upon graduation from NMU, marries Janelle, Randy being the best man in June 1997.^DW49

Initially Matt gets a job on local radio, but is fired for talking yooper. He becomes the junior reporter at Spearfish Lake Record-Herald replacing Brenda Hodunk in June 1998.^DW59 In 2001 at the end of January, after doing a good job there, albeit not Aherns-winning, Matt moves on to cover the state legislature for the Geneva Reporter,^{BB16 SQ13} to be replaced by Carla Stanton.
