Joe McGuinness, married to Nancy, wears many hats. His main job is as an accountant in Spearfish Lake, but he is also a volunteer firefighter and a EMT. He was a Marine. He also enjoys the outdoors, especially Kayaks, and has been known to surf. Joe is a stock character and shows up in many stories.

In 1995, he is in his 50's, graying, slightly larger and more solid than Randy Clark. He keeps Gil's books and when Josh and Tiffany Archer open their outdoor supply store adjacent to his business, he is known to help out, especially when the pair are off racing their sled dogs. By 2000 he adds John Archer to his business, allowing him more time with his hobbies.
