Sensei

"Sensei" is an honorific used for a martial arts teacher (male or female).

In the book Alone Together "Sensei" (no first name or last name is ever given, just the title) is described as "a middle aged, thin, wiry, black man". He runs a Dojo in Atlanta and instructed Jon and Tanisha in martial arts for personal self defense.

In chapter 12 of Alone Together a situation arises that requires Jon and Tanisha to leave Atlanta in a hurry before Tanisha's brother came after her. Sensi and one of his other students assisted them and even followed their car until they were a good distance out of town. Sensi refused any form of payment, just asked them to pass the favor on.
