Irene Niven is the wife of Norm Niven. They had two children. Their son Phil dies young in a car accident that also leaves their daughter Judith crippled. Irene has a sister, Naomi Callison.

Irene was driving the car when she was hit by a drunk driver. The accident crippled Judith and killed her brother Phil. Irene has become over protective of Judith and is very distressed when she starts going out with Ken Sorensen as she starts to do things that Irene believes are beyond her.^TNG3 It takes time, but Irene adjusts to seeing her daughter so independent.^TNG18

After Norm retired from work at the Farm Center, "he discovered that staying home with mom all day was driving him nuts."^RM11 While Norm and Irene are separated, it is not explicit that they are divorced.
