Sensei

"Sensei" is an honorific used for a martial arts teacher (male or female).

In the book Alone Together "Sensei" (no first name or last name is ever given, just the title) is a middle aged, thin, wiry, black man. He runs a Dojo in Atlanta and instructed Jon and Tanisha in martial arts for self defense.

When they decided that they needed to leave town in a hurry before Tanisha's brother came after her, he assisted them and even followed their car until they were a good distance out of town. He refused any form of payment, just asked them to pass the favor on.
